In the late 70's, Dr. Stanley Kaplan became one of the leading authorities on the use of the AMA's Guides to the Evaluation of Permanent Impairment. He went on to teach the subject up until 2013 and ultimately earned his name in the 6th Edition of the Guides as a contributing reviewer.
The process of calculating impairment is mechanical so it seemed only natural that the process could be simplified for healthcare providers by creating software that could take objective physical examination findings and turn them into a properly calculated report based on the AMA's guidelines. Cross-referencing table and page numbers made the reports easier to explain and defend.
ImpairMaster was first developed for the Radio Shack TRS-80 Model I, one of the first commercially available microcomputers. As times changed, it was re-engineered for the Apple II, followed by a variety of obscure machines leading up to the IBM PC. Over the years, ImpairMaster was written in numerous computer languages including BASIC, Pascal, C, C++, and Java. It then jumped from a character-based user interface into Windows. In 2005, it was redeveloped as a software service and continues to this day to operate in the cloud.
